material memory

material memory

Time has shifted. And so have I.

Last winter I was enveloped in a unique form of quiet. While the outside world was under a heavy blanket of snow, the studio became a space of meditative focus. It wasn't a rush to produce, but instead a discovery of new forms that would emerge from the clay. This thoughtful silence allowed me to evolve in both my practice and the nature of the objects coming off the wheel.

Cloud Commons began with a focus on the ritual of smoke. I have always been interested in how we use objects to quiet the mind and look inward. Cannabis was my first door into that interior landscape, but the frozen stillness of the winter widened that aperture.

I began to ask: what does it mean to truly inhabit a sanctuary?

A sanctuary is more than a room. It is a state of being. I have come to see that the objects we surround ourselves with are not just things. They are frequencies. They are material memories that anchor the senses and pulse with the energy of a home. Through this new work, I am seeking to provide a physical anchor for the internal, creating objects that invite a deliberate reverence into daily practice.

The Adornments as Relics

Focusing on the Adornments forced a consideration of the objects we keep closest to us. While my work has always centered on the "hold" and the function of a piece, this collection moved into a more conceptual territory.

These pieces draw from the relics of our ancestors. I spent the winter thinking about the adornments worn in ceremony and everyday life, objects that held the weight of a role or a specific moment in time.

The Pepa glaze naturally folded into this world, with its unique texture reminiscent of rain-worn granite. These pieces evoke a connection to the enduring strength of the earth’s elements while maintaining a preciousness through their refined precision.

The Lunar Adornments echo found artifacts weathered and bleached by the passage of time. They remind me of bone unearthed in the depths of the desert or under the canopy of the forest, returning from a long slumber.

Tinta and Runa trace the markings of an ancient time, following the edges of form and lives lived, the beginnings of language and incantations in unison with the earth. Tinta brings quiet presence and focus, while Runa brings magic and connection to the ethereal.

The Evolution

My practice is a constant turning of a dial. It is a way to give consideration to the different rituals that make up a life. At present, that focus is on the body. Moving forward, I am bringing this same "ancient" weight back to the domestic space through new vessels and ritual objects.

The first selection of Adornments and Artifacts is now available in the shop. These are the singular records of a very thoughtful and transformative winter.

Below is a short film that captures the frequency of the studio during this season. It is a portal into the silence where these artifacts were born.

Thank you for moving through the quiet with me.
